Pitching Tents

by Lucinda Evans

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons Romans 8:14

When Adam was first created, He was one with the Father and walked with Him in the cool of the evening (the Spirit). Adam was given dominion over every living thing and was given the mandate and the authority to subdue the earth. Before the fall, all things that Adam did were by the leading of the Spirit of God, but after the fall, Adam began to move according to the dictates of his own heart. He had partaken of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and was now basing all of his decisions and plans upon his five physical senses. Everything that he did was done according to carnal reasoning and what appealed to his flesh. Man has not changed! He still is motivated by the dictates of his own heart and what seems to appeal to the masses. This type of carnal thinking is also prevalent in the church today.

God has called us to walk by the Spirit, and in doing so, we will not fulfill the lusts of our flesh (Rom. 8:1-3)! From the time that we came into this world, we have been taught to respond and be conducive to our environment but this is not God's way. We are a new creation in Christ Jesus and we now have a new walk and we judge things a new and living way. The book of Hebrews calls it 'a more excellent way'. In John 17, Jesus prayed the Father and He said, "Father they are not of the world, but they are in the world". Yes, we are NEW and DIFFERENT! Peter said that we were a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a PECULIAR PEOPLE! And there is a creation that stands before us groaning for their deliverance and it will only come when the sons of God are manifested (Romans 8:14). The only way that this can happen is for a people to come into an understanding of ruling from the heavens and bringing heaven to earth!

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13

Our new creation man is not born of flesh and blood! He now has a heavenly origin and his Father is GOD Himself! God is moving throughout the church in many different ways and we continually hear the reports of what He is doing in different areas. Most of Christendom will find themselves chasing the meeting or trying to reproduce it in their own sanctuary, forgetting that He is God and TODAY is a NEW DAY! Man in his fallen state is a creature of habit and moves according to logic and reason. He does not understand FAITH! Our God and Father of all creation is progressive and forever sovereign in all that He says and does. Since the fall, man has continually tried to put God in a box or formulate a pattern through which He could move. And within this formula or pattern, man would find a place to worship. He would begin to worship the WAY GOD MOVED rather than the GOD WHO MOVED!

And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them. And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer. 2Samuel 5:20-25

Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. 2Samuel 6:1-2

There is a real danger in expecting God to repeat the way He has done something. We cannot reproduce God or the way that He does something. He is the divine originator and He is sovereign in the ways that He choses to manifest Himself. If we camp out at our experiences, we are going to find that God has moved on down the road. For instance, God told David that when he heard and saw the wind move through the mulberry tree, then he was to go forward and he would have victory. Oh my! Do we understand that if David had gone back there and waited for the wind to move through the tree before the next battle that God would not have been in that and David and his mighty men would have been destroyed?!!! Had he done so, all that would have moved through the tree was a false sign and not the breath of God. Glory!!!.

Many today try to mimic or copy other ministries. Others try to move into ministry before their time and presume that God will bless what they are doing. We have a good example of that in the story of Nadab and Abihu. These men were extremely presumptious and it cost them their lives!

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. Leviticus 10:1-2

And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the sight of Aaron their father. Numbers 3:2-4

When we try to reproduce something, it will bring death. God will never honor strange fire, but one thing that we can be thankful for is that we are now in an hour of grace and not the law. We are given the space to change our ways rather than to be consumed by His wrath. God is a today God and whatever is not through the will of God are works of wood, hay, and stubble!

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. Matthew 17:1-6

Immediately, the first thing that Peter wanted to do was pitch three tents for worship of the three different men. And isn't that the way that we are? When there is a powerful move of God, we begin to find ways to camp out in that experience, thinking that it will reproduce itself again! How long will we raise up idols in the midst? How long will you worship man rather than your Creator. You acknowledge Me with your mouth but your heart is far from Me! Have you not learned from the example of Peter on the Mount of Transfiguration? It is the carnal mind that wants to worship the event rather than the One to whom the even was about.
